What Hans Hermann Voss Left Us
October 3, 2026, would have marked the 100th birthday of Hans Hermann Voss. For VOSS, this anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the life and legacy of an entrepreneur who played a defining role in shaping our company’s history. He transformed his father’s family business into a globally successful corporate group and laid the foundation for the sustainable success of VOSS. His technical vision, trust in people, and entrepreneurial courage continue to shape our company to this day.
When Hans Hermann Voss received the Federal Cross of Merit in 2004, he had one special request: he wanted the award to be presented during our company’s annual anniversary and retirees’ gathering. He chose to receive the honor among the people who had worked alongside him for many years and helped build VOSS. This decision reveals much about his character. Hans Hermann Voss understood that the success of the company was built on the contributions of many people. His close connection with employees was an important part of his life’s work. The anniversary and retirees’ gathering he initiated continues to this day.
An Old Inquiry Opens New Opportunities
When the 26-year-old mechanical engineer joined his father’s household water fittings factory in 1953, the future of the small business was far from certain. The company produced household water fittings, but intense competition left little room for growth and development. Hans Hermann Voss began searching for new opportunities. While reviewing company records, he discovered an inquiry for compressed-air brake fittings that was nearly ten years old. He followed up on it, contacted the prospective customer, and found that demand still existed. The result was a new business in tube fittings for commercial vehicles. This marked an important milestone in the transformation of VOSS from a small family business into a supplier to the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, and ultimately into an international system provider of line and connection technology.
This story illustrates the way he worked. He recognized opportunities and wanted to understand how they could be implemented technically. At the center of his thinking was always the question: What must a solution offer the customer? Products had to be reliable, easy to install, and simple to maintain. If a special tool was required, it was developed alongside the product. This focus on practical application guided the continued development of VOSS. Tube fittings were followed by the world’s first quick connect system for compressed-air braking systems in commercial vehicles, and later by ready-to-install lines and additional complementary system components. Step by step, the company assumed greater responsibility for its customers’ applications.
Trust in People
Hans Hermann Voss had high expectations for technical solutions and for the work carried out within the company. At the same time, he valued the experience and ideas of his employees. Those who worked with products, machinery, or customers on a daily basis were encouraged to contribute their perspectives. In the memories of his long-serving secretary, Renate Müller-Breuer, he is remembered as a courteous and attentive individual. Always impeccably dressed in a suit and tie, he remained open to ideas and concerns while maintaining high standards and clear expectations. He often worked weekends, and on Monday mornings, carefully handwritten instructions in black ink would be waiting on small A5-sized notes.
For Hans Hermann Voss, responsibility as an employer included good working conditions, occupational health and safety, fair payment, and security in retirement. Through initiatives such as an employee welfare fund and flexible working-hours agreements, he put these convictions into practice. The training and development of young people was particularly important to him. He wanted them to have a professional future and the opportunity to develop their talents. The apprenticeship culture he fostered remains visible today: nearly one quarter of VOSS employees began their careers through the company’s own vocational training programs. This trust in people, combined with a shared commitment to success, continues to be a cornerstone of our strong sense of belonging.
Securing the Future of a Lifetime’s Work
How can a company be preserved when there are no descendants to take it over? Hans Hermann Voss and his wife, Christa, began considering this question early on. He wanted his life’s work to remain independent over the long term and sought to prevent both short-term interests and the fragmentation of the company. In 1992, they established the Hans Hermann Voss Foundation, creating the basis for a succession model that combined the long-term continuity of the company with a commitment to charitable causes. When Hans Hermann Voss passed away on July 31, 2006, the foundation became the heir and owner of the corporate group. Christa Voss remained devoted to their shared life’s work, and upon her death in 2022, her estate was likewise transferred to the foundation. Today, the foundation supports projects in science and research, education and vocational training, youth and senior programs, and charitable initiatives. Causes that were important to Hans Hermann Voss during his lifetime continue to benefit from long-term support through the foundation.
What Continues to Guide Us Today
What began as a small family business has grown into an international corporate group with 24 companies in 14 countries and around 8,600 employees. As our company has grown, so has the diversity of our activities. Today, our portfolio ranges from line and connection technology for vehicles and machinery to thermal management systems for electric vehicles, as well as solutions for liquid-cooled data centers and battery energy storage systems. Yet despite the diversity of these applications, the fundamental questions remain remarkably similar to those that guided Hans Hermann Voss from the very beginning: What does the customer need? How can an application be improved? Which new technical solution will help achieve that goal?
His legacy is therefore present in our daily work. It lives on in our commitment to advancing good ideas, investing in the next generation, and taking responsibility for the future of our company. His ideas shaped VOSS. His decisions continue to influence us today. The values that mattered to him remain an integral part of what defines VOSS. And at the next anniversary and retirees’ gathering, the people whose connection to VOSS meant so much to him will once again come together.
