VOSS Makes Steel Fittings H2ready

Fittings H2ready

Germany’s gas networks are gradually being converted to hydrogen. This means that both existing and new natural gas pipelines must be adapted. Initially, natural gas will be blended with hydrogen, eventually transitioning to 100% hydrogen. This development imposes new requirements on fluid-conducting pipelines and their connection technology in stationary gas pressure regulation and measurement technology.

A New Seal: H2ready

To certify the hydrogen suitability of components, the term “H2ready” has become widely accepted in the industry. So far, there is no official standard or testing specification, meaning that no uniform standards define exactly what H2ready entails. Various seals exist, referencing hydrogen content levels ranging from 20% to 100%.

At VOSS, customer inquiries about hydrogen-compatible products are increasing. As a result, we are further developing our established products to ensure they can be used in stationary applications with up to 100% hydrogen content.

Steel Products for Hydrogen Applications

While the market for hydrogen applications has been primarily dominated by stainless steel products, VOSS is taking it a step further: We are making steel products H2ready. Our proven steel components, such as the VOSS RingM, 24° fittings, and DKO connections, ensure the necessary hydrogen tightness—even under extreme operating pressures and temperatures. The advantages of steel applications are clear: they are 4 to 10 times more cost-effective than stainless steel alternatives.

Safety Under Extreme Conditions

Our VOSS fittings have undergone extensive stress testing. They were subjected to more than 1,000 hours of hydrogen exposure at elevated temperatures and high pressure, as well as additional tests for hydrogen embrittlement. The results confirm that hydrogen does not damage the components, ensuring that the connection systems remain leak-free and safe in the long term.

Confirmed by an Independent Testing Laboratory

The “H2ready” certification confirms that our established products are suitable for hydrogen and natural gas mixtures in all volume percentages—from 100% natural gas to 100% hydrogen. The certification was issued by the renowned DBI testing laboratory in Freiberg, which is recognized by the German Association for Gas and Water (DVGW).

H2ready for the Future

With our solutions for hydrogen use in stationary gas pressure regulation and measurement technology, VOSS is setting new standards in connection technology. Our certified products not only offer maximum tightness and safety but also enable easy and time-saving installation—even under the most challenging conditions. This positions VOSS as a leader in meeting the growing demand for hydrogen applications in public gas supply networks, supporting the realization of sustainable and innovative energy concepts.
